Game Rules

Hi all. Here's a list of our game rules and other possible ideas. Please let me know what you all think and which ones we should go ahead with for our game. As we need to take in account if these possibilities can be achieved or not - codewise.

Game Rules

  1. To complete the level you have to collect all the collectibles on each of the six sides of the cube which unlocks the door to escape.
  2. Swipe right to run, swipe up to jump and pause the game by touching the phone using two fingers.
  3. Avoid colliding with enemies or otherwise you lose, and will have to retry to a last saved checkpoint.
  4. Pause the game at the right time to avoid contact with enemies and move the cube using the accelerometer.
  5. To earn the highest point the aim is to complete the level as soon as possible by collecting all the collectibles. (Time limit)
Possibilities

If captured by an enemy you only have a certain time limit to do a task to escape.
Keep tapping the screen to defeat the enemy and escape free.
There are possible dead ends in the cube so you will need to shake the phone to restart to the last saved checkpoint.
The character can jump a bit higher each time after collecting a collectible. The collectible is a source of energy for the character.
Avoid collectibles that are traps by the enemies. Use your knowledge of the fairy tales to know what collectible is needed and which ones are bad.
(poison apple – snow white = AVOID)

Maybe one of the faces should have door which opens and says “Congrats on completing the level 1 of the cube”

36 levels in total. The last level is where you actually escape the cube.

If you collect too many collectibles that are bad your character will die.
Or it will transform into an evil fairytale character which you lose control of the player. The character is then led to trap and will eventually die. Leaving the happy ending as a sad ending.

Or it will corrupt you losing control of the character as you watch the endings of these fairytales becoming the opposites to those happy endings.

Enemies become friends and friends become enemies a twist in the fairy-tale.

Just playing with syles and things

Me and Kalveer were just playing around with styles and how we recon the main character should look combined with the silhuettes and watercolour background.

Yep, Simba is the main character in this example.
Thoughts?

Chosen Fairy tales

Okay, this is still early work but I wanted to get these decided on first and foremost so that Rebecca can make a start as early as possible on creature designs (we were thinking a couple per fairy tale? but eh that's up to you to decide :) )

The main reason for choosing these is because I'm aware that they can link with each other relatively easily so we'd probably be able to come up with clever ways to link them - will add more later/explain more when we chat on Friday (though I will be adding links and more info to this through the week so keep checking!).

1) Rumpelstitzkin = Gold + Spinning needle
2) Briar Rose (of course) = Spinning needle + Thorns/vines/woodland
3) Snow White = Woodland + Witch
4) Hansel And Gretel = Woodland + Witch
5) Fantastic Mr Fox =
(may be worth you reading Graeme's book with a version of Mr Fox being the villian) Woodland + Foxes
6) Little Red Riding Hood = Woodland + Wolf

I was considering adding The Golden Bird but because it's not well known I decided against it :S

Will add more later!

Cube Inspiration from APPSHAKER - Augmentative Reality QR Codes

http://vimeo.com/31840263

This is an exciting idea of using the cube which I found searching on Vimeo, I don't know if this will be too technical to create though with the QR Codes and Augmentative Reality concept.

However we can use this to inspire our ideas i.e. the game play.

2D ART Inspiration for Characters

These are some character designs and styles that I came across in Computer Arts Magazine and ImagineFX and others. We could adapt similar styles or use these to help us develop our work.

Some Inspiration

LevelHead is an interactive cube game cobbled together by Julian Oliver from New Zealand. The thrust of the idea is extremely simple – its internal software detects the cube’s motion, where a set of digital cameras are then used to display an appropriate image depending on your current response. This means tilting the hexahedron in a certain manner will send the walker in the said direction, where the main aim of levelHead is to exit the virtual maze within. Looks like this could be the 21st century Rubik’s Cube for kid worldwide, or they could look at it and think it too hard, preferring instead for mind-numbing shooters like Halo 3.

The cuuuuube!

Finally got around to finishing it, not as big as I would've liked to have made it but I couldn't get hold of bigger boxes.

Here it be:

The bottom pick doesn't look too great but that's because the base isn't attached - I left it like that in case you guys wanted me to add watercolour backgrounds to the faces as well? (the other's are attached together with bent paper clips >.<) I can get on that and you can pick in the morning if you want it with or without (i'll just blue-tac them on or something).

Sorry about the bad quality picks too, I shake really badly.
On a side note, managed to cut the top of my toe open making this. No idea how mind o.o

Fairy tale list (Fell free to add onto this/ post your own list!)

Thought I'd best get a list of fairytales and things rolling for peeps to start working out what would go best with the cube we'll be making.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fairy_tales

01) The Three Little Pigs
02) Sinbad
03) Tale of Two Brothers
04) Rapunzel
05) Sleeping Beauty/Briar Rose
06) Snow white
07) Snow Red (yep two diff stories)
08) Hansel and Gretel
09) Cinderella
10) Jack and the Beanstalk
11) The Ugly Duckling
12) Puss in Boots
13) Jack the Giant Killer
14) Little Red Riding Hood
15) Fantastic Mr Fox
16) The emporor's new clothes
17) The Pricess and the Pea
18) The Pricess and the Frog
19) Thumbelina
20) Bambi
21) Beauty and the Beast
22) Alice in Wonderland/Madness returns
23) The Boy who cried Wolf
24) Swan Lake
25) The Little Mermaid
26) The Pied Piper
27) The Crow (not really a "tale" but eh)
28) The Raven
29) Three Billy Goats Gruff
30) The Girl Without Hands - and other Grimm's stuff here.

Feel free to add any others, as Rebecca said before, pick 3 that you reeeaally want, and then we can break it down a bit more (one of your three can be something someone else picks - makes deciding on the final 6 easier)

I like the idea of:

- The Three Little Pigs (for the "big bad wolf")
- Beauty and the beast (castle scenes etc)
- Snow white (for the forest scenes)

I know we all like Briar Rose for thorn bushes, Dragon and bear etc so I think that should be a definate face of the cube yeah?

Our Next Level Work

Okay guys, this is stuff we need to research for next week.
So far I've got Kalveer added to this so she can put her stamp onto it, but also I need Graeme's and Rebecca's emails so I can add you guys to it to.
The research is due for next week. But Our final product of this is due March 2nd.
I've got the info on it anyway.

I'm trying to add a link to the info for now (if it doesn't work let me know! I might need to add you guys first), on the document I've put any text I add in purple just so we can easily keep track on who's said what so if someone needs something further explaining to them they can just ask that person to expand rather than spend ages finding who did what and someone else replying with something different to what the original poster meant etc.

Here's the link.

aaand I'll stop typing now... <_>

Game Idea

A side-scrolling puzzle platformer, in which you control, alternatively, both the character and the environment. Levels are structured around a cube, which can be viewed from any side and any orientation, and you must complete all six sides to progress.
During play, you navigate each side in a 2D manner, picking up all of the collectibles, traversing gaps and avoiding enemies; however, at any time the player has the option of pausing the action (during which time, the character floats in stasis) and rotating the environment, in order to access areas which were otherwise inaccessible or hidden (ceilings becoming floors, etc), and to switch sides. The character's position, prior to pausing, is a crucial strategy for play, since, for example, a character paused in the top right quarter of one side, will manifest in the top left of the next side (assuming clockwise rotation of the Euler z-axis).

Some inspirational films.

Firstly, nice work from Kalveer on the mood boards: I just gathered together disparate images and posted them up, but you've actually presented them in a way, which we can probably use for the presentation. Bravo. Incidentally I do actually own a copy of The Art of Alice:Madness Returns if you wish to see any more of that book.
The Hansel and Gretal game which Chloe posted up was also a good find: I haven't played all of it but it is remarkable how, in a Flash game, they have achieved a sense of depth simply by shrinking the characters when they walk up the screen: very smart.
Here, I'm going to post up some extracts (or all, if they are short) from films which I find inspirational, you may have heard of some, maybe not - but where I can I'll explain where you can find the whole of the film, should you have the inclination to watch them.

Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tomago)

A rare anime from 1985: this is VERY hard to find a decent trailer for, since the film is so slow and thoughtful, but basically the plot involves a young girl, alone in a strange and desolate city, who protects a large egg of unknown content or origin.
The major draw is the quality of the animation (with designs from Yoshitaka Amano), the strangeness of the designs, the music, the minimal dialogue, the mysticism of the plot: OK, basically everything - this is a favourite. The whole of the film can be found in reasonable quality on YouTube itself.

The Secret of Kells

Another favourite, I've included a couple of trailers here: one for the forest design - deliverately invoking medieval manuscripts, and a second for the song - the song, of the film - there's another sequence involving a creature which I haven't included for fear of spoiling the film - you can actually find this one in the libraries' DVD section - I can probably find that clip as well, though, if you're in a rush.

The Cathedral

Not a lot to say about this one: I just love the idea of sculpting architecture out of trees, though - As though nature has grown around the structure and then the brickwork has crumbled away, leaving the trees and vines behind to hold the memory.
One idea I had for a game set in the forest, was for a number of the enemies - aside from bird or beast - to be anthropomorphic conjurings of vine and root - walking foliage, if you will; or ghosts wrapped in ivy: shapes suggested by the branches - there to haunt the character with memories of the past.

The Tale of the Three Brothers (from The Deathly Hallows part 1)

If you haven't seen the last Harry Potter film, now you don't have to: here's the highlight. Seriously though: this is some wonderful animation - I'm still yet to find out what studio did it.
